Notions shopping

Last week I finally managed to make a quick run over to Stadham Corp, a tiny old-school sewing machine repair and tailoring/notions supply shop on the far outside edge of the city. Ever since reading about it here, I have been itching to check it out. Not disappointed!

I grabbed Spinstah for a quick lunch break dash, and it was surprisingly quick and easy to get out there and back, with time to browse. I first asked about sewing machine repair. A few months ago I received back from a friend my old machine, which she had used for lessons and then gave up on and felt remorse it was collecting dust. I decided to keep it as a back up, but it was running funny when I got it back from her so I thought I'd test out their servicing. Lucky for me the guy took a quick peek at it first--it had come back to me with the needle in backwards and I didn't even think to check that! Duh, sewer 101. Anywhoo, that just meant I brought it home again, money saved, and will give it a cleaning and test run with a fresh needle this week.

I was remarkably restrained at the shop, I admit. I needed a new seam ripper, some medium upholstry zippers for a commission, and some invisible zippers for a few dresses I'm going to rebuild post-weight loss. (After my experience with my red gala dress busting right before gala due to a recycled invisible zipper, I plan to not try that again!)

Also, seeing their tendency to stock old-fashioned tailoring materials, I asked about horsehair or tailor's cloth, and got the last yard and a quarter they had floating about.

There were a bevvy of buttons (I was so overwhelmed I didn't even snap a single picture!) and belt buckles. I decided to try and find one for my vintage dress, and sure enough, there was this stunning one in just the perfect shade of lavender. The thinnest belting they had was 1 inch, and if I can't find narrower, I will have to trim that down to make it fit through this one, but I bought several yards, thinking I can use it for other projects.

All in all, a quick, easy--and restrained--trip. I can't wait to go back when I have some proper button and zipper needs to fill!
