Work musings

Sewing, sewing, freelancing, sewing! So, a friend posted a link via another friend that an indie film is looking for a seamstress to help out their designer. Having made the wise decision to take June off from heavy designing and turn down Macbeth—despite the loss of additional cash for the summer—I decided that some extra work would be great. So, I’m working on a movie! So far I’ve just made a jacket, but I’m looking at regular work a few hours a week for the next two months, with a check come mid-August. Sweet. I can handle that, methinks.

From time to time I think this designing thing might actually become a career after all. Yeah, I took the long way around, skipping the graduate school and falling back into it by accident. But I’m making connections, getting regularly requested back by directors and other designers who like to work with me—between community, school and professional, I’ve designed more then a dozen shows, and assisted/stitched on a bunch more, many professional since getting back into theatre three years ago. And I’m having a blast (most of the time). But I doubt I’ll make the jump any time soon—if ever—as it seems even the “professionals” I know have a day job of sorts. I just need to find one with a little more artistic merit or at least flexibility.

Honestly, my day job does spoil me in terms of comfort, support, encouragement and time to explore this. However, the long commute (when most my design jobs are in Baltimore) does limit my ability to take on additional jobs and make more connections. And, honestly, this job just doesn’t feed that part of me that loves the theatre. Someday I hope to find one that does...or at least something closer to home :)
